MarJean Mays Memorial Service
December 3, 2008
At this very moment in heaven, MarJean is on the line ordering a very expensive purse and some blinged out jewelry.
MarJean was a study in contradictions. She loved her purses and jewelry. Yet each Christmas she’d tell her Secret Santa to make a donation to charity in her name.
MarJean always told the truth. And sometimes bluntly. One Lent she gave up negativity. Early on in that Lenten season she amended her promise. She gave up negativity with the proviso that she could say it, if it was true. And a lot of truth was always told by MarJean.
She was always there with a kind word and encouragement for those who were truly trying to make their way in the world. But she didn’t suffer fools gladly.
MarJean loved all sports. And she especially loved her Cincinnati Bearcats basketball. During March Madness she was over the moon to watch all those games and root against the Duke Blue Devils.
MarJean loved a little spice in her life. Hot chow chow, extra spicy hot sauce and four alarm wings were just a few of her favorites. Her chili is infamous. I’m sure that some were fooled into their first bite of her chili. “Oh, it’s not spicy,” she’d say with half smile. And then she’d laugh like crazy as the sweat began to bead on an unsuspecting forehead when spoon touched tongue.
As you listen to Christmas music and drive around looking at the festive lights this year, think of MarJean. She never liked the gaudy and over the top holiday decorations at this time of year. When she’d see a particularly awful display, she’d begin to sing, “It’s beginning to look a lot like trailer park…”
MarJean could be impatient and a perfectionist. In this past year or so, she learned patience. She took pleasure in the little things like being able to turn the key in the ignition of her car or buttoning her shirt or sitting out in the sun on a fine day. She was truly grateful to all those who helped her through the past couple of difficult years. You were all her angels on earth. Thank you to all of those who brought her smiles and Starbucks coffee. I’m sure now we’ll all have MarJean as a guardian angel.
MarJean left us with a few rules to live by:
God doesn’t like ugly.
You can say it, if it’s true.
And just because they make it in your size, doesn’t mean you should wear it.
She also left us with many memories of wit and humor. During these last few years, MarJean proved her bravery and grace. No matter how bad she was feeling, she always made time to ask about how you were doing. Now MarJean is in a place where she can watch and take care of us all. She’ll be with us during our foibles with a laugh and gentle nudge in the right direction.
With the deepest sadness,
Terri Hammond
