I knew David Jack Bell, but called him Dave, during both our tours of the Miami University MA program in Creative Writing.  Dave is a wonderful, smart and funny guy.  I'm soooo happy for Dave and his wife, Molly (also an author).  They are both excellent writers and more importantly incredible and generous people.

What I remember most about Dave and Molly was their support of other writers.  They both gave insightful and helpful critiques.  In a room filled with self-absorbed writers (cuz we all are to some degree or we'd be something other than writers), they were sanctuary from the blood seeking mob. (For an accurate depiction of critique day, see the opening scene of the movie, Wonder Boys.)  And they never told me, "You are too good a writer to write romance."  Which was pretty much the mantra of that time.  And for that I will be eternally grateful.

So if you want a good book, or if you want to support a really nice guy, go out and get THE CONDEMNED.

Good Grief by Lolly Winston

I just started Good Grief by Lolly Winston.  Very good book about a young woman facing life as widow.

Here is a paragraph about facing a really crappy job in the middle of trying to cope with grief:

"The warmth of the body causes the patch to adhere," I explain to the Herald health care reporter who's interviewing me by telephone for an article he's writing.  As public relations manager at Gorgatech, I'm supposed to improve the image of a scrotal patch product that's prescribed to men whose testosterone production is off-kilter on account of illness.  A scrotal patch!  Why can't I work on a the headache product?  The problem is, the patch doesn't always stick.  Just imagine some poor guy in a sales meeting looking down and suddenly discovering a thing like a big square Band-Aid clinging to his sock.

For another chuckle later in the book:

I know, I know as I drive up 280 to work the next morning, that I should not be wearing my bathrobe.
